characteristics

Erect, sometimes branching perennial with brownish stems. Green, lance shaped leaves grow opposite along the stalk. Delicate, five petalled, yellow flowers usually nod downward. Petals are slightly fringed and pointed at the tip. Seeds are contained in a round, shiny green capsule. Reproduces by seed or rhizomes. A member of the primrose family.

habitat

Swamps, wooded slopes, marshes, and sedge meadows.

uses

The flowers produce an essential oil. A variety of bees collect oil and pollen from the flowers.
