Perennial with tall, light green and sparsely haired stems. Dark green leaves are rough and sharply toothed. Occasionally branching, producing numerous large golden-yellow blooms with raised centres. Reseeds readily.

Prairies, woods, disturbed sites. Does not like alkali soil.

Nectar source for butterflies and long tongued bees.
Ripe seeds are eaten by a variety of birds in particular American goldfinch.
