characteristics

Erect, clump forming perennial with whorls of coarse green leaves. This giant forb bears clusters of fragrant, pinkish-purple flowers. Common name refers to the dark reddish-purple stems. Fruits are seed-like with tufts of soft pinkish hairs.

Also known as joe pye weed or joe pye plant.

Starts from seed, bare root; sow ASAP.

habitat

Bogs, roadside ditches, swales and streambanks.

uses

Nectar source for bees, butterflies (swallowtails in particular) and moths.

Used by Native American Joe Pye to treat fever associated with typhus.
