characteristics

A tall, sturdy perennial with square stems. Oval, toothed leaves are opposite; green above, whitish beneath. When bruised a scent of anise is released. Small, tubular blue-violet flowers are in spikes, flowering throughout the summer. Prolific self-seeder; can become invasive.

Member of the mint family.

Deer resistant.

Anise scented leaves and flowers are a pleasant addition in salads or as tea.

Hummingbirds, bees and butterflies like the nectar. Birds — especially goldfinches — eat the seeds.
