Erect perennial with multiple stems, and pale green leaves. Fine white hairs on both stems and leaves give the plant a hoary appearance, hence part of the common name. (Puccoon refers to the dye made from this plant.) Dense clusters of funnel-shaped, vivid yellow-orange flowers bloom at the stem's tip. Often grows in colonies.

Starts from seed, bare root, cuttings. Difficult to germinate from seed.

Attracts bees, butterflies, including painted lady (Vanessa cardui).

This plant is used for dyes.

An infusion made from this plant has sedative properties.
