Annual with upright stems, usually solitary with branching above. Leaves are short-stalked, lance shaped, toothed, and opposite; upper leaves may be alternate. Both foliage and stems are covered with tiny, bristly hairs. Flower colour varies from white, pink to purple. Trumpet-shaped flowers bloom in small clusters. They consist of 4 deeply notched petals. Fruit is an erect pod with tufted seeds. A member of the primrose family. Self seeds readily in moist areas.

Moist to wet: forest, disturbed sites, pond edges, and open areas.
